Tripura journalists brutally attacked; media bodies demand justice

In a shocking incident, a group of individuals attacked a group of journalists late Monday night in Agartala.

Agartala, Tripura, September 10 (HBTV): In a shocking incident, a group of individuals attacked a group of journalists late Monday night in Agartala. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault, leaving several journalists injured.   

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from media organizations, which have since called for stronger protections for journalists in the state. 

According to reports, six journalists were heading towards the Chandrapur Inter-State Bus Terminus at approximately 1 a.m. when their motorcycles were blocked by a four-wheel car. The occupants of the vehicle, armed with weapons, attacked the journalists without warning.   

The journalists have identified three of the attackers namely one Sukanta Debnath, an Akash Banik, and a Sourav Bhattacharya. The others remain unidentified. 

In a First Information Report (FIR) filed by journalists Prasenjit Bhattacharjee, Bijoy Singha Roy, Pranab Shil, and Mihir Sarkar, they described the attack as a targeted assault. The attackers also robbed the journalists, taking cash, gold ornaments, and damaging two mobile phones and a camera.   

In response to the incident, media organizations in the state swiftly organized a meeting with police officials. A delegation from various media bodies met with the additional director general of police, who assured them that steps would be taken to ensure the safety of journalists across Tripura.
